Eagle Lake

Like nowhere else on earth, Eagle Lake is one of Lassen County's most popular and picturesque destinations.  The lake, fed by natural underwater springs, is the original home of the Eagle Lake Trout and a fabulous place to sail or ski.

Gallatin Beach, near the marina, offers a shallow-water, sandy beach area which is perfect for the younger crowd.  Here they can create sand castles and play with their shovels and pails while Mom and Dad set up a family picnic.  The Marina area of Gallatin Beach offers services such as bike rentals, open boat storage, boat rentals, fishing equipment rentals, showers, laundry facilities, food services and gasoline.

The Eagle Lake Recreation Area is primarily underdeveloped and the natural state of the environment allows for numerous opportunities to view local wildlife, including the bald eagle.  The pine forest is home to many wild creatures.  Remember, if you plan to hike in the area, carry fresh water, binoculars and apply sunscreen.

The lake is fed by intermittent streams and several underwater springs and is in a closed basin with no natural outlet.  The result is a highly alkaline water that can support only one specially adapted member of the trout family, the Eagle Lake Trout.

Every year, Eagle Lake's trophy trout lure anglers from throughout the United States and even from around the world.  The lake, located approximately 15 miles north of Susanville, is home to a rare species of trout found only in selected waters in the north state.  The Eagle Lake Trout is one of the most coveted fish species because of its uniqueness, fighting ability and size.

There are many ways to reel in that prized Eagle Lake Trout but local anglers recommend trolling somewhat deep with worms and bobbers.  The standard is using lead-core line with needlefish and a threaded-on nightcrawler.  Use silver needlefish before the sun comes up and gold and bright colors during the day.  One to two colors is good when the water is cool.  In warmer water, four to five are needed.

Trolling hot spots are Pelican Point, Eagle's Nest, Wildcat point and near the youth camp.  The fish swarm around the underground springs found at these locations to stay cool during the warm summer months.

Eagle Lake Trout are finicky fish and it takes creativity to reel them in.  Have fun!!!
