Paul Bunyan Festival

The Annual Paul Bunyan Mountain and Blues Festival in the beautiful historic mill town of Westwood in July starts off with a pancake breakfast at the Westwood Community Center and a parade in downtown Westwood that goes into the Westwood Community Park.  Then at the park there are several events including a logging show, arts and crafts fair, commercial and food venders and blues bands.

The festival isn't the only reason to visit Westwood.  You can visit the town between Chester and Susanville on Hwy 36 anytime to enjoy its unique logging legends and old mill town heritage.  A 25-foot statue of Paul Bunyan stands next to his blue ox, Babe in downtown Westwood.  Downtown buildings are former bunkhouses for the Red River Lumber Company which carved the town out of the dense forest.  Other buildings still stand that used to serve the company and its many workers.

The Walker family started the operation in 1913 and it flourished until the mid-50's after being sold to Fruit Grower's Supply, which cut lumber for fruit-shipping boxes.  That firm closed the operation when fruit began to be shipped in cardboard boxes.

The Museum is a block away from the Paul and Babe statues, where you can find many photos and displays from the times when Westwood was a booming timber center.

In the near future, plans are to open a year-round skiing and golfing resort on Dyer Mountain just outside of the Westwood Hwy A21 on the way to Clear Creek.

Clear Creek itself offers a beautiful park to enjoy the stream that bears the same name.
