Roop's Fort

Roop's Fort is registered with the California State Historical Resources Commission, Landmark #76 and is located next to the Lassen Historical Museum on North Weatherlow St.  The fort was built in the summer of 1854 by Isaac Roop, Ephrim Roop , William McNaull, Captain Weatherlow and others and was known by the emigrants as Roop's House.  Now a city park, this meadow was a welcome stopping place on the Nobles Emigrant Trail, pioneered by William H. Nobles in 1851 and first used in 1852.  Here , emigrants enroute to the Northern California gold mines were able to rest, feed and water their stock, and obtain needed provisions at Isaac Roop's establishment.  These early pioneers built a rough one story log house with a shake roof.

The signing of the document that formed the state of Nataqua (an Indian word meaning woman or wife) was held at the Roop's House on April 26, 1856.  Peter Lassen was named president and Isaac Roop was secretary.  The early settlers believed they lived too far east to be in California and there were many conflicts about the border.  In 1859 Isaac Roop was elected as the first provisional territorial governor of Nevada Territory.  Then in February of 1863, the Roop house was the site of the "Sagebrush War".

The Sheriff of Plumas County came to Susanville to serve warrants and there was a small battle with shots fired and a few men wounded.  The dispute was settled by the governors of California and the Nevada Territory to establish the county's jurisdiction after an armistice was declared.
